Software Development Instructor - Accelerate Program

Ada Developers Academy is a non-profit, tuition-free coding school for women and gender expansive adults. We focus on serving Black, Latine, Indigenous, and Pacific Islander communities, low income people, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Our program consists of two highly immersive parts: six months of focused instruction, and five months of internship at partner companies, where students refine their skills working on real-world code.

About this position

We are looking for an Instructor to prepare students for software development careers by teaching our 3-months intensive classroom training course to students who are otherwise not prepared to enter the tech industry as developers. As a member of our Education team, you will also be responsible for working closely with the Accelerate  instructional team to deliver curriculum to students, designing and leading interactive lessons, mentoring and coaching students, and building a supportive, collaborative learning environment. Our goal as an Education team is to effectively prepare each student to transition to the next stage of our program with a solid understanding of our learning objectives and core curriculum, so that they can focus on beginning their careers as junior software developers. This is a full time position at 40 hours per week. The salary range for this position is $100,000 - $110,000.

Student Instruction

  • Communicate empathetically with new learners and set up a positive environment for learning, including instilling a sense of strong community and collaboration over competition;

  • Lead interactive lectures and programming exercises for approximately four hours per day at DIgital campus; 

  • Provide detailed, actionable and constructive feedback to students via written and 1:1 feedback for 12-15 students;

  • Supervise and classes to ensure all students are learning in a safe and productive environment;

  • Maintain accurate and complete records of students’ progress, development, and any differentiation needed to support their learning (“Learning Plans”);

  • Collaborate with campus staff to counsel students regarding their academic and social challenges;

  • Create lesson plans and grade assignments, and projects; organize supplies and resources for lessons and classroom spaces

  • Collaborate with the classroom team to provide consistent, high quality education to Ada students every day; 

  • Additional duties as assigned 

Classroom Instruction Development

  • Work with the broader Education team to continuously develop student coursework, homework, and project materials

  • Assist with the Admissions process (Such as, technical or final interviews as requested)

  • Maintain and contribute to our open source curriculum in your area(s) of focus (JavaScript, React, Python, Flask, HTML/CSS, Computer Science fundamentals, etc.)

  • Create materials that allow us to collaborate with and communicate to students in an empathetic and inclusive manner

  • Design and manage processes for effective student learning; willingness and passion to grow as an educator in methodologies and pedagogy;

Special Projects 

Admissions Interview - 

  • Conduct technical interviews for the student admissions cycle

  • Evaluate code samples and determine readiness for core program

Curriculum Development 

  • Develop creative learner-centered programming, modules, and materials in multiple modalities, including blended classroom learning, interactive e-learning modules, videos, hands-on review sessions, instructor guides and resource materials

  • Evaluate existing documentation to identify the most appropriate training approach

  • Ability to apply adult learning principles and incorporate this into curriculum design and development.

Computer Science Fundamentals & Precourse Live

  • Support Computer Science Fundamentals for students who are in internships

  • Support Precourse Live as needed

Essential qualifications

  • 4+ years of professional experience as a Software Developer required

  • Professional or volunteer teaching experience in an educational institution or program

  • Recent hands-on experience with Python, Flask, JavaScript, and/or React

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Proven history of cultivating effective and authentic relationships with others

  • Demonstrated embodiment of Ada’s values in a professional environment
